Stoneware Brown Clay "Nero" is undoubtedly our favorite clay at Neraw's workshops, when we want intensity, depth and a dark brown effect that looks expensive, even without exaggeration. Its shade works uniquely in sculptural forms and utilitarian objects with "weight" and presence.
This is a high-quality Italian stoneware body, with a chamotte that adds stability and durability to larger constructions. If you are looking for a clay with character that is pleasant to work with and rewarding in the kiln, Nero is one of the safest choices in our collection.
Tips from the studio
Tips from the studio
Nero is the clay that adds drama and intensity to your projects. The texture of the chamotte is just the right amount of intensity to give character without being prohibitive to the wheel.
Pro Tip: Work it on thicker surfaces and leave sections unglazed to bring out the natural, dark brown materiality of Nero.
Color Evolution
Color Evolution
Fresh clay: Dark brown / chocolate.
After firing: It develops into a deep brown with a natural matte character. The final shade is influenced by the temperature and atmosphere of the kiln.
Texture & Behavior
Texture & Behavior
Stability: Fireclay helps with uniform drying and reduces the risk of cracking in larger molds.
Feel in the hand: It has a more "earthy" texture compared to ultra-fine clays, without becoming aggressive on the wheel.
Material expression: Fireclay holds the imprint of the hand beautifully and highlights textures and tools.
Uses: Ideal for sculpture, containers with a strong presence, but also useful when you want a more raw result.
